What is Deep Root Fertilization?

Has your tree’s growth plateaued? Deep root fertilization can withdraw your tree from dormancy and have it reaching beautiful heights quickly.

Deep root fertilization is a process in which liquid fertilizer is injected into the ground near the roots of a tree. The process is more complicated than it sounds, which is why it is important to have a qualified arborist complete it.

Deep root fertilization, also referred to as soil injecting, can benefit your landscape significantly. Keep reading below to learn all about deep root fertilization!

How Is Deep Root Fertilization Done?

Deep root fertilization requires a special tool called a soil needle. The most absorbent tree roots are in the top two to eight inches of soil. This soil needle is inserted precisely to reach the roots at the right spot.

Once the soil needle is injected, the arborist will start root feeding trees. Liquid fertilizer is injected under high pressure into the roots using a hose and pump. A probe is squeezed by the technician to disperse fertilizer in many places under the tree at rapid speed.

It is important that you request a technician and not do it yourself. If the fertilizer is injected too high, it can cause damage and if injected too low you can waste the product. A technician will also be able to know what kind and quantity of fertilizer will work best for your tree.

Benefits of Deep Root Fertilization

Quick Absorption by Trees

The proximity to roots and use of liquid fertilizer over pellets and stakes means fertilizer can be easily absorbed by the tree roots. Because the fertilization is happening underground, it cannot be washed away by rain or blown away by winds, creating a higher absorption rate. This application also aerates the soil, which prevents damage to roots.

Prevent Fertilizer Waste and Save Money

Some aspects of gardening and landscaping are not meant to be DIY’d. Over-fertilizing can result in problematic issues, such as:

  • Overuse of product resulting in money wasted

  • Fertilizing at incorrect intervals causing irreversible damage

  • Time wasted fertilizing with the incorrect fertilizer blend

Tree and shrub fertilization is clearly complex. Their root systems are dynamic and widespread, which requires expert attention. Save yourself the time and money and have it done right the first time by a professional.

Customized Tree Plan

Since the fertilizer application is very targeted, the fertilizer used can be customized to the needs of your plant. With an arborist consultation, your tree is analyzed and a custom fertilizer blend created with micronutrients unique to each plant for maximum growth. A technician can diagnose your tree and develop a treatment plan from there.
